Our Emu Adventure:
Friendly Emus, Chicks & Hatching Eggs at Black Horse Farm!
Get ready to meet some of the most fascinating and friendly giants at Black Horse Farm – our Emus! We embarked on our Emu adventure in early 2025, and it has been an incredible experience watching these unique birds grow and interact with life on the farm here in Woodinville, WA. We're excited to share them with you and will be offering Emu chicks and hatching eggs starting in early 2026.
Our Emu Flock: Gentle Giants with Big Personalities
Our journey began with a desire to raise the rarer blonde and white Emus, alongside the standard brown. After some initial challenges with shipped hatching eggs, our flock started to take shape. We welcomed two handsome blonde males from Southern Oregon, whom we named Axle and Ozzy, and two lovely blonde females from a breeder in Olympia, WA, named Marilyn and Madonna.
As chicks, all our Emus were raised in the house, where they interacted daily with our dogs and cats. We dedicated a lot of time to handling them, ensuring they are as friendly and gentle as possible. This early socialization has paid off wonderfully! Now, about a year later, our Emus stand around 7 feet tall when their necks are fully extended. They will curiously eat treats right from your hand, love to be petted, and will often follow you around their spacious enclosure, which runs along our driveway.
Fascinating & Friendly Driveway Greeters
Our Emus have become quite the attraction! Their enclosure along our driveway means they get lots of daily comments from visitors and even delivery drivers, many of whom have never seen an Emu up close and find them absolutely fascinating. We get lots of questions about them, and yes, they are often mistaken for Ostriches!
Understanding Emus: Not Your Average Bird!
Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are the second-largest living bird by height, after their relatives, the ostriches. Native to Australia, they are flightless birds with powerful legs built for running.
Emu vs. Ostrich: While both are large flightless birds (ratites), Emus are native to Australia, while ostriches are native to Africa. Emus have three toes, while ostriches have two. Emu feathers are softer and more hair-like. (Source: San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers, Smithsonian's National Zoo)
Diet: Emus are omnivores, eating a variety of plants, seeds, fruits, and insects.
Unique Sounds: Emus make unique booming, drumming, and grunting sounds.
Emerald Green Eggs: Emu eggs are large and a beautiful deep green to almost black color, making them a stunning sight.
