Our Emu Adventure:
Friendly Emus, Chicks & Hatching Eggs at Black Horse Farm!
If you had told me a year ago that Emus would become some of my favorite animals on the farm, I wouldn’t have believed you—but here we are! These friendly giants have completely won me over with their quirky personalities, gentle nature, and striking looks. Our Emu journey began in early 2024, and it’s been a joy watching them grow and settle into life here at Black Horse Farm in Woodinville, WA.
We’re now raising a small but special group of blonde Emus, and we’re thrilled to share that we’ll be offering Emu chicks and fertile hatching eggs starting in early 2026.
Meet the Flock: Rare Blondes with Big Personalities
We’ve focused our Emu program exclusively on the blonde and white color variations, which are especially rare in the U.S. After a few early hatching setbacks, we jumped in feet-first by purchasing our first blonde pair—Ozzy and Axle, two lively males from a breeder in Southern Oregon. A month later, we welcomed two lovely blonde females, Marilyn and Madonna, from a breeder in Olympia, WA.
From there, things really took off. In early 2025, we successfully hatched Piper, our very first Emu chick born right here at Black Horse Farm. Most recently, we added Prince, a gentle and striking blonde male from the same breeder as our original females.
Each Emu has its own bold personality. Ozzy is high-energy and hilarious to watch—he’s always running laps or stirring up mischief. Axle is a bit more chill, happy to stand close and watch things unfold. Marilyn is calm and watchful, while Madonna is our bold explorer, always the first to come check out what we’re doing. Prince is mellow and affectionate, and Piper, our homegrown girl, is endlessly curious and full of bounce.
My favorite part? The way they all come trotting over when they hear the crinkle of a snack bag. They love kale, crunchy dog treats, and most of all GRAPES—and yes, they’ll gladly follow you around like oversized, goofy puppies.
Fascinating & Friendly Driveway Greeters
Their large, shaded enclosure runs along our driveway, so visitors are often greeted by curious Emus peeking through the fence. Delivery drivers and guests alike are constantly amazed to see them up close—many for the first time! Yes, they often get mistaken for ostriches, but once you meet an Emu, you’ll never forget the difference.
What Makes Emus So Unique?
Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are native to Australia and are the second-tallest birds in the world after the ostrich. Ours stand over 7 feet tall when they stretch their necks—and yet, they’re gentle, approachable, and incredibly inquisitive.
Emu vs. Ostrich: Emus have three toes (ostriches have two), and their feathers are soft and hair-like rather than stiff.
Diet: These omnivores mainly eat a commercial ratite diet but also get some puppy food mixed in for extra protein and whole dried corn is a favorite addition.
Vocalizations: Females make deep, drumming sounds—if you visit, you might hear their echoing boom across the field!
Eggs: The emerald green eggs are simply stunning—smooth, glossy, and larger than a softball.
Blonde Emu Chicks & Hatching Eggs – Coming Early 2026
Starting in early 2026, we’ll begin offering fertile hatching eggs and chicks from our all-blonde Emu flock. These rare color genetics are especially prized by collectors, breeders, and anyone looking for something extra special.
All of our chicks are raised with daily handling and socialization. Like our cows and geese, our Emus are part of the family here. We take care to ensure every bird is well-adjusted, friendly, and ready to thrive in their new home.
A Few Notes on Care
Emus thrive in open, secure enclosures and need tall fencing since they can’t fly but are excellent runners. They enjoy dust baths, love exploring their environment, and need a cozy shelter for rainy days—which we have plenty of in the Northwest!
Emus are happiest with companions, so we always recommend raising at least two together.
